Journalism

I’m a journalist by training. In 2014, I was awarded a Gold Standard certification from the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) in Newspaper Journalism. After short stints at some trade publications aimed at Britain’s small grocers, I moved into local television, and was later an online producer for a Wire agency. Later on, I joined BuzzFeed News as a religion correspondent, before becoming the UK and Europe editor of MEL, a men’s interest publication supported by Dollar Shave Club. I’ve also freelanced for a number of UK and international outlets, including BBC Newsnight, Wired, The New Statesman, The Guardian and Monocle 24. You can find examples of my reporting below.

Books & Publications

I wrote my first book, "Follow Me Akhi: The Online World of British Muslims" in 2019, which was published by Hurst and Oxford University Press. I am currently working on a second book and other long-form projects.

Client Projects

I also consult on media projects, strategy and marketing, and have worked as a multimedia producer for a range of clients in both the private and third sector. My work has helped clients expand their digital audiences, refine their public messages and build new tools to cultivate a loyal digital community. Podcasts

Like every millennial, I host podcasts too. You can hear me on Trashfuture, a politics and comedy show about all the dumb things that are shaping this century. You can also hear me twice a week on Ten Thousand Posts, a show about how social media platforms are changing the way we communicate with each other, and by extension, the very way we think about relationships in online and offline spaces.
